A Comparative Study of Land Strategy and Maritime Strategy: The Creative Convergence of the Strategic Thought of Jomini and Mahan and Its Contemporary Implications

초록

본 연구는 지상전략과 해양전략의 구조적 차이를 규명하기 위하여 조미니(Antoine-Henri Jomini)와 마한(Alfred Thayer Mahan)의 전략사상을 비교·분석하였다. 조미니의 결정적 지점과 전력 집중 개념, 마한의 제해권과 해양력 이론을 중심으로 두 전략의 공통 구조를 도출하였다. 나아가 현대 A2/AD 전략과 네트워크 중심전, 미·중 해양 경쟁 사례를 통해 고전 전략이 현대 다영역 작전 환경에서도 유효한 분석 틀을 제공함을 논증하였다.

Abstract

This study examines the structural differences between land strategy and maritime strategy through a comparative analysis of the strategic thoughts of Antoine–Henri Jomini and Alfred Thayer Mahan. By focusing on Jomini’s concepts of the decisive point and concentration of force and Mahan’s theory of sea control and maritime power, this study identifies a shared strategic logic underlying both domains. Furthermore, by linking these classical principles to contemporary concepts such as anti-access/area denial, network-centric warfare, and the maritime competition between China and United States, this paper argues that classical strategic theory continues to offer analytical relevance in the modern multidomain operational environment.
