A Study on Yi Sun-Shin’s Willingness to Follow the Order of King Seonjo to Dispatch the Navy in the Period of Jeongyu War

초록

본 연구는 정유재란 시기 선조의 출전 명령에 대한 이순신의 출전 의지 조명 차원에서 시도되었다. 관련 내용에 대하여 선조실록 기록을 순차적으로 검토하고 분석하였다. 이를 토대로 징비록, 이충무공행록 및 선조수정실록 등에 기록되어 지금까지 전해 내려오는 내용에 대한 사실 관계를 판단하였다. 이렇게 하여 얻은 핵심 결과는 아래와 같다. 정유재란 전 선조는 1596년 12월 5일 출전 명령을 내린 후 12월 28일 이순신으로부터 출전을 허락해 달라는 답신을 받았다. 이순신의 출전 허락 요청에 대하여 선조는 1597년 1월 2일 출전을 허락하면서 김응서와 이순신의 협력을 특별히 당부했다. 사실상 합동작전 허락을 하였다. 1월 14일 경 권율이 이순신에게 선조의 출전 허락을 전달하였다. 이순신이 선조에게 출전 허락을 해달라는 간곡한 요청을 한 바로 미루어, 이순신은 강력한 출전 의지가 있었다고 보여진다. 그럼에도 불구하고 군대를 미리 출동시키지 못한 이유는 육군과의 합동작전 준비 문제 및 출전 명령 지연 도착 등이 복합적으로 작용했을 것으로 판단된다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the will of Yi Sun-shin to dispatch troops to King Seonjo's order to dispatch during the jeong-yu war. The key results are as follows. Before the jeong-yu war, King Seonjo ordered Yi Sun-shin to dispatch troops on December 5, 1596. King Seonjo received a reply from Yi Sun-shin on December 28, 1596. Responding to Yi's request for permission, King Seonjo allowed the troops to be dispatched on January 2, 1597. On January 14, Kwon-yul delivered the order of King Seonjo to Yi Sun-shin. At this time, the enemy was invading. Without the permission of the king, Yi Sun-shin could not dispatch the navy. Yi Sun-shin had a strong will to engage, but the king's permission was delivered late, so he missed the time of dispatch.
