Abstract

This study is about the Jeolido Naval Battle based on Admiral Yi Sun-shin's maritime strategy and naval battle tactics. The Battle of Jeolido took place in the sea area near Geogeumdo Island (formerly known as Jeolido Island) in July 1598 on the lunar calendar. In this naval battle, 50 Japanese ships were destroyed. In this study, the concept of naval warfare through historical records was established. In addition, this study analyzed Yi Sun-shin’s maritime strategy and naval warfare tactics that appeared in the naval battle of Yi Sun-shin during the Imjin War. Those results were applied to the battlefield environment of the naval battle of Jeolido, and the battle situation map was presented by simulating the area and time of the war. In addition, the tactical formation of the Joseon Naval Forces during the engagement was analyzed. As a result, it was found that the tactic of Hak Ik-jin is the most suitable. Finally, it was analyzed that Yi Sun-shin sank 50 enemy ships and won a great victory in Battle of Jeolido by using the fleet decisive battle strategically and the Hakik-jin tactically.
