Abstract

This paper addresses the applicability of electric propulsion systems as an alternative to conventional mechanical propulsion in naval vessels, along with the resulting challenges in power quality and electromagnetic interference (EMI). In particular, it analyzes how common mode voltage generated by PWM inverters within motor drive systems becomes a major source of leakage current and EMI. To mitigate these issues, various PWM techniques are compared and their characteristics and effectiveness are evaluated. Based on this analysis, the study proposes efficient and reliable power operation strategies for the design of electric propulsion ships.
